Post-Doctoral researcher in Optics/Acoustics applied to Biology

Within the framework of an ongoing collaboration between the Ecobio Laboratory (CNRS, Université Rennes 1, France) and Cellenion SASU (Lyon, France), including via the ANR-granted MICRObial Single Cell AnaLysEs Laboratory (MICROSCALE Lab), we are looking for a skilled Post-Doctoral researcher to join our team.

Context:
Ecobio is one of the main research lab in Ecology and Environment in France. Among the current important research topics developed, the understanding of the microbiota is developing. We need support to develop the new technology developed with Cellenion, for single cell analysis of microbiota. Cellenion is a fast-growing biotech company, specialized in automated single-cell isolation and liquid handling, developing breakthrough technology in the field of single cell Omics. In 2020, Cellenion
joined BICO for an even more exciting journey.

Tasks and responsibilities:
Your overall goal will be to optimize the exhaustive stain-free detection and isolation of small microorganisms, especially bacteria, by modifying our single-cell isolation instrument, the cellenONE. You will have the freedom to investigate all technical options available to achieve this goal, which could involve optic or illumination, signal acquisition, acousto-focusing, microfluidic and soon. You will work on this project clause to a multidisciplinary team of microbial biologists as well as software, automation, and mechanical engineers. To make this story a success, you will have to:

  •  Benchmark the performances of available technologies, including the cellenONE, for stain-free
  • Determine the padlocks to exhaustive strain-free bacteria detection by the cellenONE
  • Invent and prototype optics and/or acoustics and/or mechanical solutions accordingly
  • Implement and evaluate the efficiency of the prototypes, in collaboration with Cellenion engineers
  • Structure and test those solutions in real “biological” situations, with help from the
    microbiologist teams of both Ecobio and Cellenion
  • Interact and discuss with the microbiologist team to help them in designing relevant experiments for optimal detection and isolation
  • Travel to customer sites (national and international) or scientific congresses.
  • Participate in patent filing and publications writing

Required skills and qualifications:

  • PhD in a relevant area obtained in 2019, 2020 or 2021 (to comply with French ANR “Protection of the R&D employment” funding scheme)
  • Strong knowledge of optics and acoustics
  • Experience in fabrication of micro devices (e.g. acousto-focusing devices, microfluidics…)
  • Experience in fabrication of optical systems (e.g., scanning, liquid lenses, multifoci systems…)
  • Experience in microscopy and basics in image analysis
  • Independence and autonomy
  • Excellent documenting and time-management skills
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary and multicultural environment
  • Ability to communicate proficiently in English

Good to have:

  • Knowledge of microfluidics
  • Basic knowledge of Microbiology
  • Experience in ultra-sensitive methods for detection of small biological particles

This is a full-time position, for 18 months in the first instance, starting first half of 2022.
The position will be based at Cellenion in Lyon, with regular trips to Ecobio in Rennes, on a theoretical basis of 80/20% time, respectively.
